Vintage Quartet in Autumn Concert

A concert of the Vintage Quartet is scheduled for the 4th of April 2009, at Hugo Lambrecht auditorium in Parow. The concert will start at 19h30 and donations are R35.00 per person. It will also be featuring Local Groups – Committed Mixed and Highest Praise.

Vintage Quartet started in 1986 at Bethel College as an octet. In 1989 and 1990 the group was reduced into a quartet of theology students. "We Have This Hope" Composer Dies

Wayne Hooper who composed the well known song, "We Have This Hope", has died, February 28, at his home in Thousand Oaks, California. His was 86. His best known song, “We Have This Hope,” was created for the 1962 Seventh-day Adventist General Conference Session in San Francisco. His prolific career included hundreds of compositions and arrangements for soloists, quartets, choirs, and orchestras. By popular demand, the hymn has been incorporated into Adventist church hymnals and translated into dozens of languages. Hooper worked with the Voice of Prophecy for some 65 years. He joined the King's Heralds quartet at the Voice of Prophecy in 1943. Hooper is survived by his wife, Harriet, and their four children and families: Jim Hooper, Mrs. Jan (Lind), David Hooper, and Dan Hooper.

Charlee wins a Grammy

OK, maybe not directly. Israel and the New Breed has won a Grammy for Best Traditional Gospel Album for their album Alive in South Africa. Charlee Biel and his audio recording team, including notables such as Dave Subcliff, recorded ALIVE in South Africa during two jam-packed concerts held at the His People Center in Cape Town, South Africa in August. Local Cape Town musicians including acclaimed jazz artist/songwriter Jonathan Butler joined Israel & New Breed on stage. Congrats goes out to Cape Town's own Grammy winners!

It's been a year since we first posted about the International Religious Liberty Association (IRLA) conference to take place on the 27 February to 1 March 2007 in Cape Town. 'Combating Religious Hatred through Freedom to Believe' is an apt theme for the Quinquennial World Conference reflecting the state of our world today. Dr. John Graz, secretary-general of the IRLA, added that,

Africa is the continent where Christianity and Islam are both growing rapidly, and where religious tensions can erupt into religious wars. By coming to Cape Town, we will send a strong message of love and peace to the world, and work to combat religious intolerance.

In Memory of Taliep Petersen (1950-2006)

Early Sunday morning the country was shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Taliep Peterson, internationally know musician, singer, songwriter, playwright and producer. He was found murdered at his Athlone home. Saddened more so is my friend Charlee, co-editor of this site, who for years had been close friend of the Petersen family. In Charlee's own words,

often taliep would say to me and to others that i was like a younger brother to him, and even though I never told him or anyone else that he was like an older brother to me - today i would have to say that he was my bra - when i needed a favour he was there - when i was in trouble - he would sort it for me. He took me from the ground - today i feel very honoured, for the past ten years, to have recorded some of Cape Town’s best music with him. So you want to watch those public free-to-air channels that we so prominently advertise, but its concerns you that it may void your warranty or might be illegal. Recently in East London pamphlets on how to 'hack' your decoder to access these free channels created some nervous reaction amongst consumers. Also, MultiChoice issued a warning that users "who use our DStv decoders to hack into channels the company does not offer do so at their own peril." But relax, Multichoice explained that the decoder warranty will not be compromised if you choose to go with free-to-air settings. Multichoice did however point out that they can not be held responsible for the quality of their service if users decide to alter their settings. Three Angels Global Networking (TAGnet) an independent ministry that is supportive of the Adventist Church's mission, has created new website publishing service called netAdventist.org. Visiting Speakers for Sabbath Weekend 21-22 April

Well known author and revivalist speaker, Pastor Richard O'Ffill, will be in Cape Town on the weekend of 21-22 April. Friday at 19h00 he will be at Mowbray Church and on Sabbath the 22nd on UCT Campus from 9h30 to 15h00. His presentations will focus on the family, believing that the church is an extension of the home, therefore revival must start in the home before the church experiences it.

Jëan Ross, Director, Amazing Facts Center of Evangelism (AFCOE) will be in the Cape over this same period. He will be speaking at Helderberg College at 19h00 on Friday and at 11h00 on Sabbath.

New Quarterly Adventist Mission DVD

Ever wonder where your mission offering goes? On March 29, Adventist Mission announced and new quaterly DVD will be distributed internationally for free.

The DVD will contain ten-minute video segments which the Adventist Mission says is "ideal for showing in [Bible study classes], church, vespers, or prayer meeting," as well as five-minute and one-minute segments that can be used in other situations. A film crew from National Geographic making a 60 minute documentary, The Riddle of Revelation, visited Sacramento Central Seventh-day Adventist Church to record Sabbath services and to interview Pastor Doug Batchelor, regarding the book of Revelation. Batchelor was brought to the crew's attention by the high level of Internet traffic directing them to the Amazing Facts Web site relating the prophecies of Revelation. After the interview, the director confided that the answers Pastor Doug had given made more sense to him than anything else he had heard so far. Will keep you updated once a broadcast date is set.

Dr. John Gras of The International Religious Liberty Association (IRLA) will be speaking at their Quinquennial World Conference in Cape Town, South Africa from 27 February to 1 March next year. The theme being 'Combating Religious Hatred Through Freedom to Believe'. Quite an topical theme considering recent events. I'm am lead to believe Dr. Graz will be speaking at a Rally at Riverside SDA church on the 25th February 2006 at 2:30. Will keep you updated.

Chartered in 1893, the IRLA is one of the oldest associations defending religious freedom for all. Its primary focus is to conduct seminars and conferences internationally to provide education and training for addressing religious freedom and intolerance issues. The IRLA was organized by Seventh-day Adventist leaders to oppose any restrictive legislation. In 1946, the IRLA opened its membership to anyone interested in promoting religious freedom. Members represent many faiths, such as Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, and Muslims.

Yesterday afternoon a fire broke out around 4pm and destroyed 700 hectares of vegetation from Table Mountain's Platteklip Gorge to Lion's head and Signal Hill, stopping just before the Twelve Apostles. A female tourist hiker died on the mountain from smoke inhalation. A man accused of starting fire, Anthony Cooper, 36, a British tourist, faces charges of culpable homicide and arson. He is alleged to have flicked out a burning cigarette while travelling.

No, it's not an transcendental iPod. It's an audio player from MegaVoice that's solar-powered. Can store up to 160 hours of audio and costs $25 (ZAR150). It uses a propriety format to compress the audio so you won't be able to play your (mp3) music you downloaded from Napster. This device has been around for about a year now, but it looks like two Adventist Organizations, namely Adventist World Radio (AWR) & It Is Written, have purchased 2000 units to use it to spread the gospel in remote regions of Africa. Hope they can put up with the iffy styling though.

Tell The World is the vision of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to communicate to all people throughout the world the everlasting gospel of God's love. This vision has laid out seven goals for the next five years which include: Spiritual Growth, Personal Witness, Community Involvement, City Outreach, Church Planting, Evangelistic programming and Media Ministries. In an interview with the World Church President, Jan Paulsen, it was asked if the church could reach the goal of sharing the Gospel with 6.5 billion people on the planet? "I think we can," Paulsen said, noting that the recent "Sow 1 Billion" effort has distributed 900 million Bible study invitations worldwide so far. (Interview to be aired on Hope Channel on the 20th January.)

Judge rules 'Intelligent Design is not science'

A United States Federal Judge, on Tuesday ruled that "Intelligent design" cannot be mentioned in biology classes in a Pennsylvania public school district. Adventists are among several faith groups who are questioning that ruling. Intelligent design, or ID, is the idea that some forms of life are so complex, they show the distinct hand of a designer, as opposed to origin of the universe that Darwin's theory of evolution postulates.

"We find that, while ID arguments may be true, a proposition on which the Court takes no position, ID is not science," the Judge John E. Jones III said.

Jones said advocates of intelligent design "have bona fide and deeply held beliefs which drive their scholarly endeavors" and that he didn't believe the concept shouldn't be studied and discussed.

But, he wrote, "our conclusion today is that it is unconstitutional to teach ID as an alternative to evolution in a public school science classroom."

How To Survive the 'Eating Season'

It's that time of year when we find ourselves looking for an extra hole in the belt. A Christmas/New Year's lunch of ~~turkey~~ gluten, stuffing, and other dishes and desserts can exceed 2,500 calories and 130 grams of fat. At least three times during the holidays most people will eat single meals of more than 2,000 calories. So think twice before you make a beeline for the buffet tablet for seconds and thirds.

One rich dessert, added to our daily diet for eight weeks, can by itself result in 2 to 5 kilo of newly acquired insulation.

Adventists must express practical concern for "the very poorest"

In his year-end message Pastor Jan Paulsen, world church president, noted of the world's less fortunate, that "whether they are poor, carry the HIV virus, or whatever, they are loved by our Lord. It is our duty to express that love, and to give them dignity and value as human beings. That is also our mission."

Pastor Paulsen also reflected on the year by observing that "2005 was [also] the year when several thousands of our church members met in St. Louis for what we know as the General Conference Session. We came away from that with a clear mandate to be even more deliberate in focusing on mission; and I am especially delighted that we also gave a signal that women and youth must be full and equal partners in the life and witness of the church. ... It is now our responsibility to make sure that it works."

Fuzzy Hope on DSTV

If you have recently lost your Hope Channel on your DSTV decoder don't fret. There has been a frequency change, so try an 'Scan all networks' as outlined in our walk-through. You may also have to look through all the channels on your PAS7/10 free channel bouquet to find Hope. Once you found your 'missing channel' you might experience a picture breaking up or ghosting. This might call for a re-alignment of your LNB (that expensive thingamajig on your dish). Please call an expert.
Useful Tip: When in doubt, Reboot your decoder by unplugging the power cable for a minute, then reconnecting.

Summer Sunset Concerts are back

It's that time again. Get those picnic baskets stocked up, cheese and ~~wine~~ grape juice should do nicely, because the Summer Sunset Concerts are starting on the 27th November. There will be the usual Carols by Candlelight, with loads of other genres from jazz, classical to the contemporary. There's even those Doo Be Doo folks, Freshly Squeezed or somethin? So start saving up, its R35 for adults and R10 for kids. Bring along a 'valid' (yes you know who I'm talking about) student card and get a R10 discount. And no sneaking through Cecilia forest. You have been warned.

Born in England, Jemuel Anderson moved with his family to New York City at the age of four. He began taking piano lessons at the age of seven from his older brother, who was an outstanding classical pianist. He later attended Andrews University where he earned bachelor’s degrees in both mathematics and computer science.

OK, you can relax, we're not being attacked by scrawny lime green men with eyeballs punctuated randomly across their faces. I'm talking about alien vegetation! The grass on the 'sports field' is so long crop circles won't look out of place. It also seems that the grass is always greener on the other side - literally! Ok, maybe someone ain't abiding by the water restrictions. But come on Riverside lets get our act together and show visitors that the grass is greener on our side. Let's get mowing.

UPDATE: The smell of freshly cut grass wafts across the Athlone plain. Houston... the lawn has been cut.... Over and out.

Riverside Car Rally Results

The Provisional results are in! The 2005 Riverside Car Rally took place on Sunday 30th and was enjoyed by all. The turn-out could have been better, however those who didn't hit the snooze button that morning relished in the some entertaining challenges. It is safe to say we don't have any aspiring Ernies of Tigers' in our midst's. The golf 'challenge' proved interesting and the 'submerged clue' created some memorable video footage! But at the end of the day Denise and Omelia took the 2005 Trophy.

Appropriate Music for Worship

Seventh-day Adventists Church leaders decided to remove suggested "applications" from the church's philosophy that would have recommended that congregations "shun theatrics" and say "Amen" instead of applauding during worship services. This document/guideline won't be music to everyone's ears (pun intended) but I guess it's a start.

"Not all sacred/religious music may be acceptable for an Adventist," says a statement that is considered to be a guideline rather than policy. "Sacred music should not evoke secular associations or invite conformity to worldly behavioral patterns of thinking or acting."

Jan Paulsen, president of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, said his world travels for the church have impressed him with the wide range of worship that is considered appropriate by church members.

On Monday the Seventh-day Adventist World Church President, Jan Paulsen, faced questions put to him by Adventist young people live from Andrews University Campus. Paulsen also launched the updated Let's Talk website to continue the dialogue between his office and Adventist young people.
I thought in the first broadcast, Paulsen was a little vague in some answers (I guess one can't get specific in hour one). I haven't yet listened to yesterdays broadcast, here's hoping we'll have an improved sequel. With the new website I think the church is making the right move so that our Adventist young people can have a direct line to their church leaders.

Spring has Sprung

24 September, yes the public holiday, will be filled with activities with "Foods of the World" on sale at nominal prices. This is our outdoor Spring Festival which will start at 10:30am until 2:30pm. It is a family fun day, so all are welcome. There will be activities for the children, young adults and adults. The day will end with an open air concert featuring our local talent. So come and join us as we officially kick off the spring season.

Great Firewall of China

This story is about a week old but recently in China, the government has allegedly denied Internet access to a wide variety of religious websites, including sites concerning religious freedom and the Tibetan Dalai Lama. The Forum 18 News Service reports that the Internet censorship is an effort by the Chinese government to control Internet usage in a country where nearly 80 million people are connected to the web. That number is expected to double in the next six months. Interestingly, China’s Golden Shield firewall only blocks religious freedom websites written in Chinese languages but allows such websites written in European languages.

So next time your'e surfing be thankful can read this and the majority of the internet. In South Africa we have other restrictions however. Did you know VoIP is illegal in SA. But that's another issue for another time.

Sudan still in Crisis

Sudan is condemning the U.N. Resolution for its government to disarm the Arab militia (Janjaweed) in 30 days. For fifteen months already an armed militia have been accused of killing thousands and destroying entire villages. Children have been wounded and are sick, and thousands of women have been brutally raped.

So far, ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) has airlifted 35 metric tons of relief aid, including blankets, tents, therapeutic food, and medicine to 45,000 people. And 12,000 more are receiving clothing and seeds.

Let's hope the politicians stop dragging their feet and do something constructive.

UPDATE: Safarig, a Global Mission Center in the Darfur region of Sudan, was attacked and leveled to the ground by Janjweed militias. Homes were burned, and an Adventist church was destroyed.

“Everybody fled for his life,” says local church leader Daniel Marach. Forty-six church members, along with many others, managed to travel safely to a camp in Abujabra. According to Marach, the journey was difficult, but no one was injured.

Off Topic: Did you miss out on an entry last year? Rush over and enter... But wait! There is an new entry process where you have to prequalify. And you thought it was gonna be easy.

Due to the overwhelming success of the 2004 "return to Chappies" Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour, and the entry rush this sparked, the Cycle Tour management has decided to re-evaluate the current method of entry. In order to participate in the 2005 event, a 3 stage entry process has been introduced.

So Stage 1 has begun today. You have till Monday 22 August to submit your application. Oh yes, there's an non-refundable admin fee of R20.

It's all about having to be fair. Yeah right! Seems like entering next year's Tour de France will be easier.

Anna Samusionek

Actress and model Anna Samusionek is one of the most popular theater and television personalities in today's Poland, watched by millions in popular TV soap operas. Anna has recently become known for more than her frequent appearances on magazine covers. Those magazines are now talking about her "return to God, meeting and embracing biblical truth," as she puts it, and about her becoming a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Ms Samusionek still works at her profession, but also now travels across the country performing in Christian concerts and readings and sharing her faith.

Ullanda Innocent is on her way to the Mother City. Riverside SDA Church and others are organising an Youth Week of Spiritual Emphasis and Family Life Marriage Renewal Concert Production. Wow! What a mouthful.

The week kicks off with a gospel concert on Sab 17th July at 20h00. The spiritual Emphasis Week will be run by her husband H. Schubert Palmer an interventional cardiologist. I believe Ullanda has been to Cape Town before, so let us know what you think of her singing prowess. She has quite a impressive resume.
